The Ocean is Dying: What can you the scientist do?

Marine management areas are an increasingly popular, yet historically ineffective, tool for protecting biodiversity and preventing extinctions.  There are numerous reasons ranging from inadequate political support to lack of economic alternatives.  Lack of sound scientific information is one of the reasons.  In this talk I’ll examine the critical information needs to improve management effectiveness.  I’ll discuss research needs from the natural and social sciences and share ideas on how research programs can be designed and implemented to ensure the results directly contribute to conservation action at the local to global levels.

Dr Leah Bunce is Senior Director of the Marine Management Area Science Program at Conservation International.  MMAS is providing the science to build effective MMAs around the world.
