The Politics of Conservation in the Developing World: Grasping a Tiger by the Tail

I will focus upon the complicated politics of Project Tiger's
inception, and its intersection with US foreign policy, Indian
nationalism, bureaucratic infighting in the Government of India, and the plummeting tiger populations on the ground.

Michael Lewis is an assistant professor of history at Salisbury University, Salisbury, Maryland. He trained first as a biologist and later in American studies. Some of his talk will draw on his book Inventing Global Ecology, which comes out of research conducted in India.
