Aug 31 - Matthias Ruth, University of Maryland Engineering, Public Policy, and Center for Integrative Environmental Research Hot Nights (and Days): Life in Bremen, Germany, Under an Altered Climate As the reality of climate change hits home, cities around the world are beginning to explore potential impacts and adaptation strategies. Building on my work in the US and New Zealand, the project presented in this seminar explores impacts and adaptation strategies in one of northern Germany’s major harbor cities. Specific attention is given to the implications of climate change for energy use and infrastructure. The research findings point towards a need for new investment and policy. I discuss those findings and alternative investment and policy responses, as well as their potential relevance in the Maryland and broader US context. Dr. Matthias Ruth's research focuses on dynamic modeling of natural resource use, industrial and infrastructure systems analysis, and environmental economics and policy. His theoretical work heavily draws on concepts from engineering, economics and ecology, while his applied research utilizes methods of non-linear dynamic modeling. Professor Ruth has published 9 books and over 100 papers and book chapters in the scientific literature. He collaborates extensively with scientists and policy makers in the USA, Canada, Europe, Oceania, Asia, and Africa. |
