Nonprofit Management and Leadership

Nonprofit organizations, philanthropy, and social entrepreneurs are major players in how public policy gets developed and implemented as well as how change occurs in our society. In the United States, the nonprofit sector encompasses over a million organizations, annually reports trillions of dollars in revenue and assets, represents approximately ten percent of the workforce, annually generates over four hundred billion dollars through donations and volunteers, and is primarily funded by government resources.

In response, the Maryland School of Public Policy (MSPP) established a program in Nonprofit Management and Leadership for graduate and undergraduate students to develop the skills and habits of effective public leaders and philanthropists. This innovative program incorporates “hands on experiences” and has been extensively profiled by the Washington Post. Established in January, 2010, this program has ambitious goals to become one of the premier academic centers for the study of  Nonprofit Management and Leadership. This program is made possible through a generous gift from Bruce and Karen ('76) Levenson, whose goal is to produce graduates committed to advancing the work of nonprofits and to introduce students to the importance of philanthropy in society and their own lives.

Dr. Robert Grimm is the Director of Nonprofit Management and Leadership. Dr. Grimm comes to the University of Maryland after having served as Director of Research and Policy Development at the Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS) from 2004-2010, a grantmaking organizations that awarded over a billion dollars in grants to nonprofits each year and oversaw federal programs such as AmeriCorps. He was also appointed Senior Counselor to the CEO of CNCS in 2006. Philanthropy and Nonprofit Management courses are available at both the graduate and undergraduate levels. Additionally, the program hosts a speaker series highlighting a wide array of professionals in the philanthropy and non-profit field. Given how central nonprofit organizations and social entrepreneurs have become to the development and implementation of public policy and social change, we are excited to be one of the few public policy schools to deeply integrate philanthropy and nonprofit management into its curriculum and activities.
