All incoming students bring to their graduate studies a dream of making a difference. The School of Public Policy helps them translate their idealism into the capacity to serve a public purpose - whether in the public, private or non-profit sectors - and to make a career of it. After rigorous academic work in graduate school, students must make the transition to the working world. Sound advice and counsel from role models can add immeasurably to their ability to network and to seek positions consistent with their aspirations and training.
The Maryland Mentor Program supplements the formal Master's curriculum at the School of Public Policy by matching national and community leaders with our talented graduate students considering careers in public service. The program serves as an integral part of the intellectual, managerial and leadership training of our students and can be invaluable to them as they plan and prepare for their professional careers.
Under the Maryland Mentor Program, each graduate student is matched with a mentor that interacts with them periodically during the course of their studies. Mentors provide insights and introductions that make the career path easier to negotiate. Furthermore, mentors are able to suggest intellectual and professional opportunities the student might not suspect were available.
If you are a current student and interested in learning more about the Maryland Mentor Program, please contact C. Bryan Kempton, Associate Director of Career Services and Alumni Relations at 301-405-4845 or bkempton@umd.edu.
