In January 2006, the University of Maryland School of Public Policy, in partnership with the Council for Excellence in Government, began to offer the Executive Master of Public Management Program, leading to a Master of Public Management degree, in downtown Washington, D.C. With classes conducted twice a week during evening hours and a course of study that is enhanced by numerous enrichment activities, the Executive Master Program is at once convenient and challenging, practical and engaging.
As an Executive Master Program degree candidate, you will follow a carefully designed 30-credit curriculum that provides the frameworks and tools that you, as a public sector leader, require to effectively and responsibly define, evaluate, and choose among competing policy options. Moving beyond traditional pre-career public policy program offerings, the Executive Master Program degree curriculum assumes a far richer understanding of organizational and political processes. More sophisticated management issues that are rarely touched upon in similar degree programs, such as results accountability and performance management, are directly addressed.
The Executive Master of Public Management Program is designed for students with five years of public management and policy-related experience. As a degree candidate, you will move through the curriculum as a member of a cohort which will afford you the opportunity to establish and cultivate lasting academic and professional connections within a diverse and highly motivated group of your peers. You will find that the program stresses discussion over lecture and offers a rare blend of courses designed to provide traditional public management skills with courses that emphasize innovative, ethically responsible, and results-oriented leadership.
